Week_8 of UIR

I feel that www.talkingcock.com is a very good website which locals and foreigners speaks their truthful and honest view on disscussed topics. As Singapore does not encourage public speaking of personal opinions, such a website allows people to do so. Therefore it is popular.

Here are my viewpoints of the three diffierent roles:

Singapore's Prime Minister:
If I am the Prime Minister, I would feel offended but also amused. Offended because there is many viewpoints and opinions which are not so good to hear afterall. However, the words are all honest from the people of Singapore, or some foreigners maybe. Amused because there really are some suggestions I think I've missed out which would benefit Singapore, and opinions on the ridiculous things I've done for Singapore. But still with the suggestions and opinions, I can see what I can do to improve and help in benefitting the citizens of Singapore.

Singaporean:
This is the best website where I can voice out my viewpoints. So many complains and suggestions for the government to change and improve the lifes of Singaporeans. Also by viewing some of other topics, it serves as an entertainment source for me to either agree or disagree with them quietly. Most topics I would post would be related to 'money no enough'. Afterall, we are all so practical, and no money, WE COCK!

Foreigner working / studying in Singapore:
If I am a foreigner, I would laugh at the opinions of how Singaporean feel in Singapore. All opinions there would be honest, therefore most post would be funny. Also, after reading a lot of them, I would feel a little disgusted by how and why Singaporean would say such things to the Government. It shows that Singaporeans are unproud of their country.

Week_6 of UIR

URL:
http://www.sciencedaily.com/articles/earth_climate/global_warming/

Purpose:
The purpose of the website is mainly to provide information about the causes and effects of Global Warming. Though little, it also mentions about how we can do to reduce and prevent further temperature rising.

Coverage:
Website targets audiences who are concerned and want to know more about Global Warming. It provides detailed articles as well as graphs which supports and increase the source's reliability. It is definitely comprehensive as it covers a wide area on Global Warming. Though there are links to other useful websites related to my topic, it is rather difficult to locate them.

Authority:
The website is from an authorative source, ScienceDaily, where information are updated daily.

Accuracy:
The latest article posted was on 22 July 2008, which is the day i posted this. It shows the efficiency of the articles and definitely there is quality in its accuracy. Most of the articles are posted after doing studies and analysis from researchers and professionals. In addition, the statistics can help support and increase its accuracy of the discussed area. All the references are stated clearly and there is no grammatical errors whatsoever.

Currency:
The website and its information is updated daily, therefore being up-to-date. The information is well maintained, but the interface is rather difficult to read, as the placing of articles made the website look too wordy.

Accessibility:
The website is easily accessible, and also free from signing up and login in to read the aticles, which makes it more convinenent for users. It is free too. The arrangement as mentioned has much more to be improved, but the links are mostly located as the sides of the page, therefore users can find them easily. There are pictures relating to the articles to help users get a pictorial view of the effects of Global Warming, such as Retreating Ice Glaciers.

Usability:
Nagivation would not be a problem for users, and the pictures relating to the articles can also help link to the articles itself. However, some links are too small to locate, and users may find the website too wordy and squeezy.

Overall:
Overall, I feel that the website is a very good source of information and articles relating to Global Warming. However, the wordy-ness together with user interface of the pages must be improve to attract users attention to read more, or else it would tire our eyes out. If I am to rate the site, it would be 8/10.

Week_7 of UIR

Topic: Issues on Global Warming
DONE BY: MOCK

Introduction

Global warming is the increase in the average measured temperature of the Earth's near-surface air and oceans.Increasing global temperature is expected to cause sea level to rise, an increase in the intensity of extreme weather events, and significant changes to the amount and pattern of precipitation. Other expected effects of global warming include changes in agricultural yields, modifications of trade routes, glacier retreat, species extinctions and increases in the ranges of disease vectors.

Resources Used

http://www.sciencedaily.com/articles/earth_climate/global_warming/

Summary of Resource

The website provides brief headings of articles, mostly showing the after effects of Global Warming. Articles include Rising of Sea Levels, Depletion of Ice Shelves and Graphs of Temperature Changes. The website also allows users to navigate easily, and shows clearly the details of the articles when viewed.

Brief Evaluation of Resource

The purpose of the website is mainly to provide information about the causes and effects of Global Warming. Search engines and meta search engines are machine-compiled, while subject directories are human-compiled. Therefore its more reliable.
Meta search engines find the most appropriate results which makes it more credible. However, search engines displays all results in order of relevance.

Search engines returns large amount of hits, which user can have large variety of websites to choose from. However, it is not as reliable and credible as meta and directory searches because of the large amount of irrelevant hits.
Meta search engines compile the most appropriate results which let users have more relevant and credible websites. However, the results found are very few.
Search directories are human-compiled and therefore the hits are the most reliable compared to the other two. However, the links must be reviewed 1st, therefore there will be a larger lag and loading time.

Search directories would best meet my searching needs. The links found are human-compiled which makes my search much more credible and reliable. Moreover the links are reviewed before posting, therefore it will be most related to my search.

Week_4 of UIR

Practical 3
Here are 4 websites I've researched on.

Resource 1:
Purpose of resource : News
URL: http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/science/topics/globalwarming/index.html?inline=nyt-classifier#
Reasons :
The article is taken from New York Times, which is a news organization. It mentions more about the current events, such as how greenhouse gases had affected the atmosphere and contributed to global warming, and used diagrams to show retreating ice from the recent years.

Resource 2:
Purpose of resource : Personal
URL: http://ccr.aos.wisc.edu/news/0305046.pdf
Reasons :
Website provides articles with more personal opinions. Though articles mentions on the statistics and impacts of global warming, it does not focus too much on a particular topic but instead, article mentions on many different topics related to global warming. Tries to convey message by giving as many information as possible.

Resource 3:
Purpose of resource : Information
URL: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_warming
Reasons :
Website provides many useful information such as statistics and negative impacts of Global Warming. It also contains many personal opinions. However, it doesn’t have a purpose such as to persuade readers to do something.

Resource 4:
Purpose of resource : Entertainment
URL: http://warmalglobing.com/index_files/latenight.htm
Reasons :
Although website does not have much information about Global Warming, it uses humor and jokes to let readers remember the importance and impact of the climatic change much easier and clearer.

Week_3 of UIR

Practical 2

HEY..
Here is some work i've done for week 3.

Personal:
URL - http://ccr.aos.wisc.edu/news/0305046.pdf
It’s a personal article from Ruddiman, William F. which mentions about mainly, ‘How did humans 1st alter the global climate’ and some of the ‘future implications and warnings’ towards global warming.

Organisational:
URL - http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/science/topics/globalwarming/index.html?inline=nyt-classifier/top/news/science/topics/globalwarming/index.html?inline=nyt-classifier#
Article is taken from New York Times. Article talks about how greenhouse gases affected and contributed to global warming. A diagram on retreating ice from the past years.

Some of the search facilities I used are the Yahoo Search Engine, Google Search Engine and Wikipedia.
Keywords i've used are ‘Global Warming’, ‘News articles’, ‘Journal’, ‘Impacts of global warming’, ‘Greenhouse Gases’, ‘Retreating glaciers’ etc.
The major differences between an organisational and personal website:
The organizational website is developed by traditional companies which provide articles with a higher reliability and credibility. It also provide information on current situations of global warming more than the personal website, which provide more of personal opinions.
